The First Born Program, established in 1997, was named one of the nation's 10 most innovative and exemplary prevention programs in 2002 by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention and several other collaborative national agencies.

 

 
 
 
Service Eligibility

FBP is a unique home-visitation program designed to meet the needs of New Mexican families. All services are free and offered to all families pregnant for the first time and first-time families, including adopting families, within the program service areas. Services may begin at any time during pregnancy or at the birth of the baby and may continue until the child is three years of age (36 months), or until family goals are achieved.

The success of the First Born Program is based on the following program characteristics:

  1. is free, universal and voluntary;
  2. has multiple goals;
  3. is flexible in intensity and duration;
  4. is sensitive and responsive to the unique cultural characterisitics and circumstances of our community;
  5. has a well trained and dedicated staff;
  6. has a strong evaluation component;
  7. has a comprehensive and flexible core curriculum;
  8. has realistic expectations
  9. is offered to all first-time families without regard to economic or medical status.; and
  10. has strong medical community support

The First Born Program has a clearly articulated theory, implementation protocols, culturally sensitive programming, program fidelity, high retention rates, sound evaluation by an independent evaluator, and integrity.
