Program Overview
Encouraging Healthy Babies in Nurturing Environments

The First Born Program provides mothers, fathers, and primary care providers with education and support to encourage normal growth and development of happy, healthy babies in positive, nurturing families.

The First Born Program builds family and community relationships by supporting the idea that a healthy pregnancy and childhood are not only critical to the immediate well-being of the child but are also a basic to building a resilient family and healthy community.

How It Works

ALL first-time pregnant women and first-time families are offered services. Services may begin anytime during pregnancy or when the baby is born and continue until the child is three year of age or family goals are achieved.

Services are provided in the home or other suitable locations and occur weekly or as often as needed to meet family goals. Services are delivered by a staff diverse in age, culture, ethnicity, language, education, experience and economics. The staff is an effective combination of degreed professionals (registered nurses, clinical counselors) and non degreed professionals who provide support, education, assessment, referral and advocacy. At the core of any successful home visiting program are relationships because all human development occurs both through and within relationships.

In addition to First Born Home Visiting services, all first-time families will be offered a postpartum home visit by a nurse. The visit with the First Born Nurse includes a clinical assessment of mom and infant, family support and education, screenings, and referrals as necessary.

Service Eligibility

FBP is a unique home-visitation program designed to meet the needs of New Mexican families. All services are free and offered to all families pregnant for the first time and first-time families, including adopting families, within the program service areas. Services may begin at any time during pregnancy or at the birth of the baby and may continue until the child is three years of age (36 months), or until family goals are achieved.
